North Korea Fires Over 10 Ballistic Missiles Following Trump Dialogue Offer
- Massive Barrage: North Korea fired more than 10 ballistic missiles into the East Sea from the Sunan area on Saturday afternoon.
- Swift Rejection: The launch effectively shut down recent diplomatic overtures from US President Donald Trump regarding renewed dialogue.
- Drill Retaliation: Pyongyang executed the strike in direct protest against the ongoing 'Freedom Shield' joint military exercises between Washington and Seoul.
Nor͏th Korea launched a large number of ballistic missiles, more than 10 of them, into the East Sea on Saturday afternoon, which ends a pause of 47 days where they h͏ad not been testing a͏ny weapons. This show of military force is a direct and forceful reaction to the joint military exercises currently happening between the US and South Korea, and also recent attempts at diplomacy fr͏om Washington.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff noticed the launch coming from the Sunan area at approximately 1:20 p.m. local time. Japanese defense officials quickly verified th͏at the projectiles had already landed in the ocean. Military forces in the area immediately went on high alert. Tracking data is being shared quickly between Seoul, Washington, and Tokyo, with surveillance being increased to keep an eye out for any more launches.
This show of force happened not even 24 hours after a surprise meeting at the White House between US President Donald Trump and South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok. Trump used this ,meeting to publicly suggest starting diplomacy again. He asked directly if Kim Jong-un, the leader of North Korea, would be willing to talk directly again. North Korea’s response was to fire missiles.
That missile barrage, it is also a strict retal͏iation against the ‘Freedom Shield’ joint military drills, which were running from March 9 to 19. Allied forces deliberately scaled back field training this year avoid escalating tensions, but North Korea, they ignored the concession anyway. State media condemned the maneuvers as just an outright "North invasion drill."
Kim Yo-jong, who is the powerful sister of the North Korean leader, issued a severe warning just one day into the allied exercises and warned that military movements close to North Korea's sovereign safety zone would trigger "unimaginably dire consequences." Saturday's launch marks this regime's third ballistic missile test of 2026.
