- ◈ Squad Omission: Sardar Azmoun, Iran’s leading striker with 57 international goals, was left out of the 35-man roster for upcoming World Cup warm-ups.
- ◈ Political Fallout: Reports suggest an official expulsion following Azmoun's social media post featuring a meeting with the ruler of Dubai.
- ◈ Regional Tension: The move comes as Iran launches strikes against the UAE, casting further doubt on the team's 2026 World Cup participation.
Iran’s star forward Sardar Azmoun has been left out of the national team squad for upcoming friendlies amid reports he was axed for political reasons.
The decision to drop the prolific goalscorer appears rooted in a social media post, rather than his form on the pitch. Iranian media outlets claim Azmoun was expelled from the team for an act of "disloyalty" to the government, this stems from a photo Azmoun shared on Instagram showing a meeting with Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai. And the timing of the post was particularly sensitive, as Iran recently launched drone and rocket attacks on the UAE following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in airstrikes attributed to the U.S. and Israel. The situation is, delicate to say the least.
The Fars News Agency, which is known to have pretty close ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, they cited an inside source from the national setup, confirming that Azmoun had been kicked out. Even though the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran has not made any kind of formal announcement about it yet, this whole thing just adds to the feeling that there is lot of uncertainty around the future for football in the country. Iran maybe will not even be able to participate in the next World Cup, which is being jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada; this remains unsure because of the growing conflict with Washington.
With Azmoun now out of the picture, the national team has started to look at some new players. Dennis Eckert, a striker who was born in Germany, has been called up to the squad for the first time ever. Eckert plays his club football for Standard Liege in Belgium and he is eligible to play for Iran due to his Iranian father, he joins a team is really trying hard to keep their focus on playing football, but geopolitical tensions it seems are threatening to completely overshadow all of their preparations for the World Cup.
