OpenAI to sell AI to US government via Amazon cloud
- Pentagon Expansion: OpenAI will sell its AI models to US defense and government agencies through Amazon Web Services (AWS).
- Rival Ousted: The deal follows the Pentagon severing ties with Anthropic after the firm refused to allow its AI to be used for autonomous weapons.
- Strategic Shift: A renegotiated agreement with Microsoft now allows OpenAI to partner with rival cloud providers for lucrative national security contracts.
OpenAI Secures Classified Pentagon Contracts Through Amazon Cloud Following Rival's Ouster
OpenAI has struck a pretty massive deal, actually, to distribute its artificial intelligence models to US defense and government agencies. This is all happening through Amazon's cloud computing unit. The aggressive expansion they are undertaking means that the ChatGPT creator, OpenAI, can immediately support classified Pentagon operations, which is quite something.
The US military definitely needed a new supplier for AI, and it seems they foun͏d one in OpenAI, perhaps unsurprisingly.
Late last month, the Pentagon abruptly dropped Anthropic. The rival AI firm had secured a lucrative defense contract, worth up to $200 million. They had being working with Palantir and Amazon Web Services to integrate their Claude models into, classified intelligence systems. However, that relationship imploded back in February, following Anthropic executives decided they would not allow the government unrestricted military access to their technology. And they specifically stonewalled the deployment of their AI for autonomous weapons. Also domestic surveillance operations were a no-go.
The Pentagon retaliated swiftly as you could expect. Defense officials labeled Anthropic a "supply chain risk" and entirely severed th͏em from any federal work related to those areas.
OpenAI seized the vacuum left by Anthropic. The company had previously restricted its federal engagements to unclassified government use only. That is a barrier that is now gone. By partnering directly with AWS, OpenAI is embedding its proprietary models deep into the existing federal cloud infrastructure, presumably that is required to manage highly classified operations. And that’s a big shift for t͏hem.
The move required serious corporate maneuvering. Last fall, OpenAI officially transitioned into a for-profit entity. During that structural shift, executives renegotiated their exclusive agreement with Microsoft. The updated terms explicitly gave OpenAI the legal clearance required to partner with rival cloud providers to hunt down national security contracts.
